Ordering Numbers for Struggling Students

A first grader came to my room today for her intervention time, with a worksheet in her hand, asking for help. I looked it over: ordering three 2-digit numbers. The good thing is that we were working on reading 2-digit numbers correctly. We could kill two birds with one stone- practice reading the numbers on her sheet and then order them.
We worked hard to read the set of three numbers and then she would look at me, helplessly, with no idea how to order them. These numbers might as well have been German. I had to find a way for this to make some kind of sense to her.
I grabbed her old vertical number line (click here to go to the product on TPT) and some paper clips and had her find all three numbers on the number line and mark them with clips.

Then we talked about where smaller numbers were (bottom) and how they got bigger going up. She did have difficulty finding the numbers but this was the start of an important goal that she will reach no matter how long or how hard. I was happy to see her doing something herself with minimal help from me after a few that we did together. I think she did well!
